Experimental Study on Isoeffect-Dose on Late Rectal Injuries for High-Dose-Rate and Low-Dose-Rate Intrarectal Irradiation in Rabbits

Hitoshi OGATA

Abstract: Rectal injuries produced experimentally in rabbits by applying high-dose-rate (HDR) and low-dose-rate (LDR) intrarectal irradiation were evaluated and the LDR/HDR dose ratio producing iso-late-effects was calculated. The incidence and severity of rectal injuries were evaluated after intracavitary irradiation of the rectum at dose rate of 446 cGyhr as LDR and in the range of 420-833 cGy/min as HDR. A total of 36 rabbits were divided into 6 groups and irradiated with the doses at the rectal surface of 25, 35, 45, and 55 Gy as HDR groups, and 60 Gy or 76.5 Gy as LDR groups. The estimated LDR/HDR dose ratio derived from macroscopic and microscopic examination was 1.44-1.45. The LDR/HDR ratio obtained was smaller than the value postulated from the radiation biological basis.
