＜総説＞単純ヘルペス脳炎

抄　録：単純ヘルペス脳炎は，従来は致死性の疾患であったが，抗ウイルス薬の開発により治療可能な疾患に変貌してきている。単純ヘルペス脳炎の患者には，早期診断即治療の原則が重要である。早期診断のためには遺伝子解析などの新しい検査方法などが期待されており，最新の情報を知る必要がある。また，抗ウイルス薬の登場により神経症状も変移してきており，新たな対応に迫られている。

Herpes Simplex Encephalitis

This is a review article on herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), which is a sporadic disease associated with high mortality and severe morbidity. with the recent advent of effective antiviral drugs, the disease can now be successfully treated, and the development of newer, more potent, and selective antivirals offers the prospect of even greater efficacy. When patients are treated early, at a stage when neurological deficit is minor, the outcome of HSE may be quite favorable, while delay in therapy until after the development of coma results in little improvement in outcome. Therefore, for a rapid, sensitive, and specific 'non-invasive' method is needed for the early diagnosis of this disease.
