Hormone Secretion from Single Endocrine cells:
Analysis for Lactotrophs in the Anterior Pituitary Gland

Jun ARITA

Abstract: The cell immunoblot assay (CIBA) has been shown to be reliable to quantify the amount of prolactin secreted from individual lactotrophs of the anterior pituitary gland. This assay can be applied to endocrine cells other than the lactotrophs and be modified specifically for a variety of purposes. A number of studies using the tethniques including the CIBA have indicated that prolactin secretion under basal conditions as well as in response to the inhibitory and stimulatory secretagogues are heterogeneous among lactotrophs. It seems that heterogeneity in hormone secretion is not rare but general in endocrine cells. Studies of the functional heterogeneity in hormone secretion may clarify the cellular basis for the regulation of the sensitivity of endocrine cells to a specific stimulus.
