Review of Imaging Methods Visualizing Vascular Compression for Trigeminal Neuralgia and Hemifacial Spasm

Yoshishige Nagaseki

Imaging methods that have been used to visualize vascular compression in trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm are reviewed. It has been impossible to show the relationship between vessels and nerves simultaneously using skull X-P, vertebral angiography, CT scan and/or gas CT cisternography. An oblique sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method which we developed is also discussed. MRI appears to be the best imaging method currently available for visualizing vascular compression.

Key words: MRI, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, microvascular decompression
