Analysis of dream context

Hiroaki NAGASAKI

Dream is used to be appearance of subconscious and pieces of memories during sleep, while reverie is a day-dream like replaying pieces of conversation. Dream and reverie consist of normal network of memory, and learning but include the subconscious level's activity. The subconscious is another human mental activities including unsatiable libidos, concealed intentions, grievous grudges, temptations, rages, and fears. Those are used to be suppressed in the normal human activities level, but often to be appeared. For example, car and weapon change the personality to induce accidental injury and even murder. Otherwise the subconscious contains private and selfish motivations. Sigmund Freud and his school have done many works to identify the subconscious in dream. The context of dream is often abnormal in date, time, place and persons. How these abnormality concern to the subconscious memories and processing will be discussed in this review.
We pointed out three rules of dream analysis; (1) Thinking rule, which is to know how the conscious thinking appears in dream. (2) Substitution rule, which is to know why the dream analysis uses symbols and substitutions. (3) Learning rule is to know the neuronal model how old memories extinct by new learning.
On those three rules, we tried to compare Japanese dream and English dream, because the meaning of words and symbols have changed through countries and era. Especially the speaking context is often different from the thinking context in the same person. Sometimes dream used to use a metaphor to show their intention indirectly. The metaphor is one of typical substitution to express covered mental activities.
