『カンタベリ物語』本文の中でチョーサーが初めて使用した
ラテン語とフランス語の研究(5)

　これはチョーサーが『カンタベリ物語』本文で初めて借用したラテン語とフランス語の研究である。今回は(4)に続き、145.emplastre〜180.fruytesteresまでの36語を扱う。借用の年代は1386年（頃）と確定しており、これとフランス語における初出年とを比較し、借用の早さ、借用の文化的背景を論じる。その際大陸のフランス語と英国のフランス語とを区別し、馴染みのフランス語からか海峡の彼方のフランス語からかによって借用の意味の違いを明らかにする。

A Study of Latin and French Loan Words Which Chaucer First Used in
The Canterbury Tales except the General Prologue (5)

This is the fifth installment of a study of Latin and French loan words which Chaucer first used in The Canterbury Tales except the General Prologue. This time I treat the next 36 words, No.145 emplastre to No.180 fruytesteres. The date of the first borrowing is ascertained to be about 1386. The present study compares the date with that of the first recorded appearance in French, and elucidates the rapidity, and the cultural background, of borrowing. Special emphasis is placed on distinguishing the two sorts of French, Continental French and Anglo-French (or Anglo-Norman),thus making clear the nuance of borrowing. (To be continued)
