アイオワ大学医学部を訪れて

平成12年３月５日から３月12日まで，吉田洋二学長の命により，アイオワ大学医学部を訪れた。
アイオワ大学には，名古屋大学医学部を卒業した山田徹先生が神経内科の教授としておられ，本学の非常勤講師として毎年講義をお願いしている。アイオワ大学医学部の医学教育の実態を知ることは，曲がり角にきた本学の医学教育を発展させる上で，意義のあることであった。とりわけ，４年間の医学教育はいかによい臨床医を育てるかに専心している。１〜２年目に基礎系および診察に必要な臨床実習は終了し，３〜４年はすべて病棟での臨床実習である。１〜２年の間はチュトリアル教育が先行し，講義形態の授業はきわめて少ない。オスキーは頻繁に行なわれていた。アイオワ大学を訪れて，この様な教育の実情を知り，本学の教育の改革に益するところが大きいと思われた。




A concise overview of medical education of the University of Iowa

According to President Yoji Yoshida,Drs.Shiozawa and Shindo visited the University of Iowa and learned medical education system.In the University of Iowa,there are,at first,170 medical students a year whose educations are continued for 4 years.In M1 Year,gross anatomy,biochemistry,cell biology，medical genetics,structure and function of human organ systems(histology and physiology,skeletal muscle,cardiovascular,respiratory,hematology/blood,special senses,renal,endocrine/reproductive,gastrointestinal,skin/integument,exercise/temperature regulation),immunology, neuroscience are scheduled to be learned.In M2 Year,general and systemic pathology,principles of infectious diseases, medical pharmacology.Almost all are directed by tutorial systems.Clinical practices without using patients are found in �T,�U,�V,and �Win the two years medical trainings.All students are required to pass Step I of the United Stated Medical Licensing Examination to be promoted to the clinical.In First Clinical Year of Clinical M3/M4 years,students are divided into small groups.Core clerkships are included into community based primary cares,internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology,pediatrics,surgery and required subspeciality clerkships (normally 12 weeks from among neurology,psychiatry,anesthesia,dermatology,ophthalmology,orthopedics,radiology,urology,and,EKG and laboratory medicine).In second clinical year,remaining required subspeciality clerkships,advanced clerkships (inpatient generalist subinternship and clinical care or emergency medicine),and electives.All the students are required to pass Step II of the United States Licensing Examination at the end of the first clinical year.
