英法 Legal Jargon の中世仏語起源について（１）

　英法用語に出会うとき、どことなく英語らしさが感じられない。フランス語を知っていた場合、形態・用法は必ずしも純粋ではないが、どうやらこれらは大部分フランス語だと感じる。
　本研究ではJohn Pritchard 著 The Penguin Guide to the Law. second edition 1985 の附録の一つである Legal Jargon: An A-Z Guide から単純語（ただし合成語も含む。）133語を取り出し、今回分として、はじめの66語について何語のどういう側面に起源を有するかを調べた。結果として Anglo-French が従来明かされた以上に語彙に関与していることが分かった。角括弧でくくった訳語については有斐閣版英米法辞典（初版22刷昭和62年）を参照した。

A Study of the Medieval French Origin of the Legal Jegal Jargon of English Law (1)

When we see legal terms in English Law, we find some strangeness in them. If we are well versed in French, we feel as if we found French words, though not always genuine in form and use, in them.
In this study, I picked up 133 simple words (including compounds) out of Legal Jargon A-Z Guide, one of the Appendices of John Pritchard's The Penguin Guide to the Law, second edition 1985.
In this first installment, I treated the first 66 words and elucidated in what side of what language each originated. I found that Anglo-French was much oftener involved in them than has so far been elucidated. (To be continued)
