「カンタベリ物語」本文の中でチョーサーが初めて使用した
ラテン語とフランス語の研究(1)

　これはチョーサーが『カンタベリ物語』ではじめて借用したラテン語とフランス語の研究である。その総数は418語で、Joseph Mersand 著 Chaucer's Romance Vocabulary (Reissued in l968)のAppendix lI Romance Words Introduced by Chaucer の中からピックアップした。今回ははじめの36語を扱う。借用の年代は1386年（頃）と確定しており、これとフランス語における初出年とを比較し、借用の早さ、借用の文化的背景を論じる。その際大陸のフランス語と英国のフランス語とを区別し、なじみのフランス語からか海峡の彼方のフランス語からかによって借用の意味のちがいを明らかにする。

A Study of Latin and French loan words which Chaucer first
used in The Canterbury Tales except the General Prologue (1)

This is a study of the Latin and French loan words which Chaucer first used in The Canterbury Tales except the General Prologue. The total number is 418, based on Appendix II : Romance Words Introduced by Chaucer in Joseph Mersand's Chaucer's Romance Vocabulary (Reissued in 1968). In this first installment 36 words will be treated. The date of the first borrowing is ascertained to be about 1386. So the present study' compares the date with that of the first recorded appearance in the French language, and elucidates the rapidity, and the cultural background. of borrowing. Special emphasis is placed on distinguishing the two sorts of the French language, Continental French and Anglo-French (or Anglo-Norman), thus making clear the nuance of borrowing.
