『カンタベリ物語』本文の中でチョーサーが初めて使用した
ラテン語とフランス語の研究(2)

　これはチョーサーが『カンタベリ物語』本文ではじめて借用したラテン語とフランス語の研究である。その総数418語は Mersand書の第五章 Chaucer's Contribution to the English Vocabulary の表に拠ったが、実際にAppendix IIで検討した結果410語であるので、そのように訂正したい。今回は次の36語を扱う。借用の年代は1386年（頃）と確定しており、これとフランス語における初出年とを比較し、借用の早さ、借用の文化的背景を論じる。その際大陸のフランス語と英国のフランス語とを区別し、なじみのフランス語からか海峡の彼方のフランス語からかによって借用の意味のちがいを明らかにする。

This is the second installment of a study of Latin and French loan words which Chaucer first used in The Canterbury Tales except the General Prologue. The total was 418 according to Ch.V, Chaucer's Contribution to the English vocabularv in Mersand's Chaucer's Romance Vocabulary. But actually counting the words listed in Appendix II. I found that it was 410. This time I treat the next 36 words, No.37 to No.72. The date of the first borrowing is ascertained to be about 1386. The present study' compares the date with that of the first recorded appearance in French, and elucidates the rapidity. and the cultural background, of borrowing. Special emphasis is placed on distinguishing the two sorts of French, Continental French and Anglo-French (or Anglo-Norman), thus making clear the nuance of borrowing. (To be continued)
